
“Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam…” sang Monty Python. They must have been looking in my Hotmail junk folder. Ads to improve your love-life, strange requests from unknown saucy “ladies”, fake Rolex watch ads, dodgy credit promises…we all get them.
But why is unsolicited email called “spam”? What on earth does it have to do with “shoulder of pork and ham” – a wartime and school lunch-box delicacy?
Well, according to geek legend, it stands for “Self Propelled Advertising Material”.
